Description

1866 Liberty Eagle, XF45
First With Motto Issue

1866 $10 XF45 PCGS. In 1866, coming out of the Civil War during which circulating gold coinage was heavily hoarded, there was little commercial need for new eagle production. The Philadelphia Mint struck only 3,750 pieces, all of the With Motto design type. Perhaps only 75 to 90 examples survive in all grades today. This Choice XF coin displays sharp detail and partially lustrous fields with original honey-gold patina. Light surface abrasions accompany the grade. Population: 12 in 45 (1 in 45+), 32 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N1793)
