    Description

    Mid-Condition Census 1866 Eagle

1866 AU 50 PCGS. Doubled Date. A very rare date with an impressively low mintage of only 3,750 business strikes. This is one of the finest pieces known, most likely a mid-condition census coin, with one mint state coin perhaps extant (mentioned in Akers' book) but none certified by the two major services. As with virtually all the coins from the Warren Miller Collection, originality is of paramount importance. This piece is unquestionably original with medium reddish-golden surfaces whose highpoints are accented by deeper gray patina, this being especially noticeable on the wingtips of the eagle. Overall there are very few marks on either side, but a larger one figures prominently on the obverse--a long vertical abrasion at the end of the point of the truncation of the bust. (NGC ID# 264J, PCGS# 8649)
