    Description

Conditionally Rare About Uncirculated With Motto 1866-S Eagle

1866-S $10 Motto AU50 NGC. With an original mintage of just 11,500 pieces, the 1866-S With Motto Eagle is a very scarce issue that rivals other San Francisco issues such as the 1858, 1859, 1862, 1863, and 1865 in rarity. Only a handful of pieces have achieved AU grades at either of the two major grading services, and to date neither PCGS nor NGC have graded a Mint State example (4/03). The present representative possesses soft reddish-gold surfaces with a few hints of luster remaining in the protected areas. Scattered abrasions appear on either side, as is common with these big gold coins after some time spent in the channels of commerce, but none are singularly mentionable nor overly distracting. Population: 5 in 50, 3 finer (4/03). (NGC ID# 264K, PCGS# 8650)
