Seldom Seen AU53 1866-S Motto Ten Dollar

1866-S $10 Motto AU53 NGC. Because of the time and distance between the Philadelphia Mint and the one in San Francisco, the modified dies with the new motto did not reach the west coast until April 1866. As a result, almost half of the mintage of ten dollar gold pieces did not show the new motto. This is one of the finer examples known of the 11,500 struck with IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. Significant original mint luster remains and each side is covered with rich reddish patina. A bit softly struck, the surfaces show numerous small abrasions but none that are of singular importance. Population: 6 in 53, 6 finer (1/05).(#8650) (Registry values: N4719)
