Description

1866-S Eagle, AU55
First of the Motto Tens

1866-S $10 Motto AU55 NGC. The year 1866 saw the first use of the Motto design on many denominations, making this date especially popular with type collectors. Only 11,500 With Motto eagles were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1866, and examples in Choice AU condition are rare. This well-detailed specimen displays rich orange-gold surfaces and satiny mint luster. A few abrasions in the left obverse field accompany scattered small marks, as expected for this briefly circulated gold coin. Only 60 to 80 1866-S Motto ten dollar gold pieces are thought to survive. NGC Census: 14 in 55, 3 finer (12/24).(Registry values: N4719)
