Description

1866-S No Motto Ten Dollar, AU50
Important Transitional Year for Type

1866-S $10 No Motto AU50 NGC. Ex: Long Island Collection. The 1866-S No Motto ten has a mintage of just 8,500 pieces, and PCGS estimates only 40 to 55 survivors, making the issue similar in rarity to the celebrated 1870-CC ten. Yet the '66-S No Motto ten is much more affordable than the '70-CC, and must be regarded as a great sleeper within the series. Traces of mint luster remain beneath rich, orange-gold color throughout this pleasing No Motto example. A pair of minor reeding marks in the left obverse field are joined by a few light, widely scattered abrasions. Both the obverse and the reverse retain bold definition for the assigned grade. Census: 8 in 50, 21 finer (4/24).
