Description

1867-S Ten Dollar, AU50
Only 50 to 75 Coins Extant

1867-S $10 AU50 NGC. Gold coins circulated extensively in the hard-money West. The 1867-S eagle was no exception. Of the 9,000 ten dollar gold coins struck at San Francisco in 1867, none are known to have survived in Mint State. The finest certified examples are three NGC-graded examples in AU58. Merely 69 submissions are recorded at NGC and PCGS combined, possibly representing as few as 50 coins. This AU50 Coronet eagle has bright, partly lustrous surfaces that show myriad abrasions. The centers are strongly defined. A major rarity in the series that should command a premium. Census: 6 in 50, 13 finer (7/16).
