Description
1867-S Eagle, Attractive AU Example
Unknown in Mint State
1867-S $10 AU50 PCGS. Struck to the extent of a meager 9,000
pieces in Reconstruction-era San Francisco, the 1867-S was made
(for context) in the year the cabinet of legendary collector Joseph
J. Mickley was auctioned off. Most of the issue was "rode hard and
put up wet," and even today with "gradeflation" the issue in
unknown in Mint State at either PCGS or NGC. The average certified
piece is only XF40 or so. This Almost Uncirculated example boasts
considerable luster remaining over surfaces that are still faintly
prooflike underneath field chatter and extensive small- to
medium-sized abrasions. Attractive yellow-gold central color cedes
to deeper amber-gold near the rims. Population: 4 in 50, 4 finer
(3/13).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 264M, PCGS# 8652, Greysheet# 9468)
