1867-S $10 AU50 PCGS. Struck to the extent of a meager 9,000 pieces in Reconstruction-era San Francisco, the 1867-S was made (for context) in the year the cabinet of legendary collector Joseph J. Mickley was auctioned off. Most of the issue was "rode hard and put up wet," and even today with "gradeflation" the issue in unknown in Mint State at either PCGS or NGC. The average certified piece is only XF40 or so. This Almost Uncirculated example boasts considerable luster remaining over surfaces that are still faintly prooflike underneath field chatter and extensive small- to medium-sized abrasions. Attractive yellow-gold central color cedes to deeper amber-gold near the rims. Population: 4 in 50, 4 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N4719)
