Description

1867-S Eagle, AU58
Finest at NGC and CAC

1867-S $10 AU58 NGC. CAC. Writing for PCGS CoinFacts, David Hall provides a sense of just how rare the 1867-S is, especially in high grades: "It is estimated that only 50 to 75 examples of the 1867-S survive today in all grades. I have never seen or heard of a mint state specimen. I was only able to obtain an EX45 for my set and I looked for 6 years." This is one of the top four examples certified (all are at NGC), and it is the only one among them with a CAC approval sticker.

The lower stars and olive leaves are typically soft, but the overall impression is rather sharp. The talons, fletchings, and feathers are fully defined. A trace of friction on the cheek and hair bun limit the grade. Luminous peach-gold surfaces radiate abundant mint frost. Census: 4 in 58, 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 58, 0 finer (1/18).
