The low mintage of 10,630 pieces for the 1868 eagle was typical for the era -- among gold coins, only double eagles were produced in generous amounts in the years following the Civil War -- but ensured the scarcity of high-grade survivors. This piece shows attractive color and luster with a few larger marks mostly relegated to the reverse fields.
