Description

Elusive 1868-S Ten Dollar, AU58
Unknown in Mint State

1868-S $10 AU58 NGC. The post-Civil War mintage for this early S-mint eagle was only 13,500 pieces, most of which clearly circulated--possibly all of which, as neither service has graded a Mint State example and the Smithsonian's specimen is a VF30. This elusive orange-gold near-Mint coin shows a somewhat soft strike on the lower obverse and upper reverse. There is minor high-point rub and a few small ticks, both consistent with a short stay in circulation. Census: 10 in 58, 0 finer (8/10).(Registry values: N2998)
