Description

1870-CC Ten Dollar, Fine 12
Revered First-Year Rarity

1870-CC $10 Fine 12 NGC. Variety 1-B. The usual variety with the mintmark slanting downward. Rusty Goe, author of The Mint on Carson Street, frames the popularity of the 1870-CC eagle as follows: "A member of the revered trio of first year gold coins from the Carson City Mint, the 1870-CC is at the top of the list in terms of overall rarity for the series." Only 5,908 coins were struck, and perhaps as few as 45 to 60 pieces survive.

This khaki-gold Fine 12 representative is pleasing for the grade. Clearly, the coin served its intended purposes in the channels of Western circulation, showing considerable wear and myriad marks. Still, outlines remain strong and the date and mintmark are bold. Census: 2 in 12, 31 finer (12/20).
