Description
1870-CC Eagle, Fine 12
The Most Famous Motto Issue
Important Carson City Key
1870-CC $10 Fine 12 PCGS. Variety 1-A. This Fine 12 example
of the 1870-CC eagle had recently been discovered when it was first
auctioned six years ago. This is only its second public appearance
in nearly 150 years, and one of just 40 to 55 survivors. The 5,908
ten dollar gold pieces struck at the Carson City Mint in 1870 were
the first eagles ever produced at that now-fabled facility. The
coins were dispersed into local circulation, where they suffered a
high rate of attrition, making any present day offering a
significant event. This well-worn example features olive and
reddish-gold color that specialists will appreciate. The date and
mintmark are bold, as are outlines of the other major design
elements. Moderately abraded, though none pose any serious
distraction.Ex: Chicago ANA Sale (Stack's Bowers, 8/2013), lot 4514.
