Description

1870-CC Eagle, Choice VF
Singular Carson City Key Date
Inaugural Year for the Nevada Mint

1870-CC $10 VF35 PCGS. Variety 1-B, with a slight downward-sloping mintmark. This is the usual die variety for this most famous of Carson City eagles.
The facility began coining operations in 1870, accomplishing a respectable mintage of 5,908 eagles that was in keeping with other production totals of the era. However, the 1870-CC has a lower survival rate than the 1870, for example, with about 50 known representatives. According to Doug Winter, the issue's "indisputable rarity and its status as the first gold issue struck at the Carson City mint should make it one of the most desirable 19th century United States gold coins."

Heavily worn and abraded is how most 1870-CC eagles are found. This piece is high-end for the VF grade level with good curl and feather detail. However, myriad marks are peppered over deep orange-gold surfaces with coppery accents. The most apparent abrasion occurs on the tip of the bust truncation. Certified in an old green label holder. Population: 8 in 35, 28 finer (1/18).
