    Description

    1870-CC Liberty Eagle, VG10
    Low-Mintage, First-Year Key

1870-CC $10 VG10 PCGS. Variety 1-B. Only 5,908 Liberty eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1870, the first year of coinage operations at the famous Western facility. There was virtually no numismatic interest in branch mint issues in 1870, and large denomination gold coins were seldom collected, outside of the minuscule yearly proof offerings from the Philadelphia Mint. As a result, no examples of the 1870-CC eagle were saved by contemporary collectors and all of the coins circulated heavily in the hard-money economy of the region. The surviving population numbers no more than 45-60 examples in all grades and the 1870-CC is unknown in Mint State. Doug Winter considers the 1870-CC the rarest Carson City eagle in absolute terms and it is the greatest condition rarity of the series.

The present coin shows extensive, even wear on both sides, but all major design detail remains intact. The date, mintmark, legends, and motto remain legible, aside from the W in WE. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show the expected number of minor abrasions, but no problems are evident. We expect intense competition from series specialists when this celebrated rarity crosses the auction block. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 4 in 10, 48 finer (7/16).
