Description

1870-CC Eagle, XF45
The Rarest CC Ten

1870-CC $10 XF45 NGC. Variety 1-B. The more common variety, with the first C of the mintmark slightly higher. The 1870-CC, as the first eagle from the Carson City Mint, is one of the most popular dates in the entire Liberty Head ten dollar series. While its 5,908-piece mintage is higher than that of six other Carson City tens, it is the rarest eagle from this mint.

The 1870-CC circulated extensively, evidenced by most known examples being well worn. Douglas Winter (2001) estimates that 35 to 45 examples are known; Rusty Goe (2003) suggests 70 to 80 pieces; and the PCGS website estimates 45 to 60 examples are extant. NGC and PCGS have certified fewer than 80 specimens in all grades, none finer than AU55.

Uniform yellow-gold coloration runs over the semibright surfaces on both sides of this Choice XF example, and traces of luster are seen in some of the recessed areas. The design elements are typically struck, including the usually seen minor weakness in the hair curl above Liberty's ear, the eagle's neck feathers, and the arrow feathers. Distributed marks are somewhat fewer and less serious than ordinarily seen on surviving specimens, making the coin's overall eye appeal better than that usually encountered. The aficionado of Liberty Head eagles or Carson City coinage will want to give serious consideration to this rarity as it does not appear at auction all that frequently. Census: 6 in 45, 11 finer (12/13).(Registry values: N7079)
