Description

1870-CC Eagle, XF45
The Rarest Carson City Ten

1870-CC $10 XF45 NGC. Winter 1-B. The more common of two 1870-CC varieties, with the first C of the mintmark slightly higher. The 1870-CC is the first ten dollar gold issue from the Carson City Mint and it ranks among the most popular dates in the entire Liberty Head ten dollar series. Despite the 5,908-piece mintage being higher than that of six other Carson City tens, it is the rarest eagle from this mint based on the survivorship -- a fact supported by grading service population data.

Doug Winter notes: "Of the three denominations of gold struck at this mint, the eagles are the rarest and the most difficult to complete in higher grades. Every date from the 1870s is either unknown or extremely rare in Uncirculated." The 1870-CC circulated extensively, evidenced by most known examples being well worn. Carson City authority Rusty Goe (2020) suggests 60 to 75 pieces survive in all grades combined, excluding "Details" pieces; and the PCGS website estimates 45 to 60 examples are extant. NGC and PCGS have certified just over 100 examples in all grades including numerous crossovers and duplicate submissions, none finer than AU55 save for a single AU58 coin certified by PCGS.

Pleasing orange-gold color runs over the moderately abraded surfaces on both sides of this Choice XF example. Traces of luster exist in recessed areas. The central design elements are typically struck, including the usually seen minor weakness in the hair curl above Liberty's ear, the eagle's neck feathers, and the arrow feathers. Distributed marks are frequent but somewhat fewer than ordinarily seen on surviving specimens, making the coin's overall eye appeal better than often encountered. Liberty Head eagle collectors and Carson City specialists will want to give serious consideration to this formidable rarity, as it does not appear at auction all that frequently. NGC Census: 12 in 45, 15 finer (12/24).
