Description

Exceedingly Rare AU 50 1870-CC Eagle

1870-CC $10 AU 50 NGC. Deep orange toning with some original luster remaining. Minor abrasions are evident and the strike is slightly soft, as normal for the issue. There is a noticeable scratch in the lower obverse field above the date. Douglas Winter, in his book, Gold Coins of the Old West-The Carson City Mint, 1870-1893, mentions that the 1870-CC eagle was the first gold coin struck at the Carson City Mint, and even with 6 CC-mint eagles having lower mintages, it is the rarest Carson City eagle. He further states that he considers it the rarest Carson City gold coin with an estimated 25-30 pieces known. There are no Mint State specimens known and the two major grading services have certified only two pieces in AU 50, with none finer (1/99). It is always a special occasion to offer this exceedingly rare issue for sale, and this is no exception. This is the finest 1870-CC eagle we can remember having offered for sale and we expect the reaction to be commensurate with the importance of the coin.
