    Description

    Desirable AU55 1870-S Eagle

1870-S $10 AU55 NGC. Microscopic S mintmark is centered over left upright of N below. Apparently just one die combination was used to produce 8,000 or 9,000 coins. The Guide Book gives a mintage of 8,000 pieces while Breen's Complete Encyclopedia records a figure of 9,000 coins. Regardless of the correct figure, few have survived in any higher grade. This is a nicely detailed example with deep orange-gold color and excellent surfaces for the grade. Survival of a coin such as this is mostly a matter of chance as most entered circulation immediately after they were struck. Population: 9 in 55, 2 finer (8/05).(#8659) (Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 264V, PCGS# 8659)
