Description

1870-S Ten Dollar, XF45
Low Mintage and Low Availability

1870-S $10 XF45 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint delivered just 8,000 eagles in 1870, during an era when double eagle production was vastly greater and gold coin production for the year was low for many 1870 denominations. The 1870-S tens received little numismatic consideration, and per PCGS, there are only "80 to 100 known." This Choice XF ten dollar retains traces of mint luster and smooth wear on the motifs. The portrait displays light roller marks, as made, but in general post-strike abrasions are few. The 1870-S was the first S-mint ten issue of the "bulging bun" subtype with six folds in the center hairbun. Population: 12 in 45, 31 finer (8/24).(Registry values: N1793)
