Description

1871 Liberty Eagle, AU55
Only 1,790 Coins Struck
CAC Endorsed

1871 $10 AU55 NGC. CAC. It comes as no surprise that the 1871 Liberty eagle is a challenging issue. A circulation-strike mintage of just 1,790 pieces means this Philadelphia date was rare the day it left the Mint. The Bowers' Guide Book of Gold Eagle Coins estimates about 100 to 125 examples survive in all grades, and only one or two pieces are known in Mint State. This impressive Choice About Uncirculated example is sharply struck with lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces. Traces of prooflike reflectivity cling to the devices -- as one might expect for a gold coin with such a low mintage. This is one of the few 1871 eagles to earn CAC endorsement. Census: 17 in 55, 17 finer. CAC: 2 in 55, 1 finer (10/24).(Registry values: N2998)
