Description

1871-S Ten Dollar, XF45
Underappreciated Rarity

1871-S $10 XF45 NGC. The 1871-S eagle had a mintage of only 16,500 coins, although this was actually one of the higher production totals from any mint for this period. There are fewer than 100 examples believed to survive in all grades, and none are certified as Mint State. The date is rarer than the population reports would lead one to assume, and this Choice XF example is actually finer than most known representatives. Both sides show pleasing wheat-gold patina, with grade-consistent rub on the devices, but strong detail remaining. A small mark in the field near the chin is the only surface flaw of note. Census: 20 in 45, 40 finer (1/15).(Registry values: N1793)
