Rare 1872 Ten-Dollar
1872 XF 40 PCGS. The 1872 is one of the rarest dates in the entire Coronet series, and is one that is often recognized by collectors who do not specialize in gold. The mintage was a minuscule 1,620 pieces and Breen estimates that perhaps as few as 10-12 coins survive in all grades. Most are heavily marked and low grade with this XF 40 being slightly above the median grade usually seen. This piece does not show any large or distracting marks, just a number of small ones on each side that are consistent with the grade. Some softness of strike is noted on the highpoints and the coin has a light reddish caste overall.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 264Z, PCGS# 8663, GSID# 9393)
