Description

Extremely Rare 1872 Ten Dollar--Tied for Finest Known

1872 MS 64 NGC. Most recently offered as part of a four-piece mint set of 1872 gold coins in our Sacramento National Money Sale, where it was described as, "A rare and highly respected issue in the ten dollar Coronet series with only 1,620 pieces originally produced, of which perhaps two dozen are extant today in all grades. This piece is tied with one other as the finest known and certified, a piece we sold in our October 1995 Long Beach Sale for $46,750. The fields are bright and have a semi-reflective glimmer with a good dose of cartwheel intermixed as well. The surfaces overall are lovely with a subtle blend of rose and lilac patina. Lightly abraded, the most obvious identifier for pedigree purposes is a faint alloy streak that runs diagonally from northeast to southwest in the right obverse field. A small spot is seen at the top of the eagle's left (facing) wing."
