Description
1873-CC Ten Dollar, AU53
Among the Rarest CC Dates in High Grade
1873-CC $10 AU53 PCGS. Variety 2-B, the rarer of the two die
varieties for this issue, showing the mintmark placed below the
fletching. The obverse die is shared with Variety 2-A, which
represents the majority of the known 1873-CC eagles. Heritage last
handled a problem-free Variety 2-B coin in the 2017 FUN Signature,
a piece that graded XF45 PCGS. It realized $30,550.The 1873-CC has long been recognized as one of the rarest Carson City eagles in higher grades. There are fewer than 10 pieces known in About Uncirculated, and the current PCGS population shows just one coin certified in AU55 and one in AU58 with none in Uncirculated (12/19). It is likely the third-rarest Carson City eagle in AU and higher after the 1870-CC and the 1879-CC.
Since October 2004, there has been just a single auction appearance of this date in PCGS AU53 and that was the Bently Collection coin that Heritage sold in March 2014 for $58,750. Neither the PCGS AU55 nor the AU58 have ever been offered for sale at auction (both are off the market in tightly-held collections), making the Jacobson coin a significant opportunity for the advanced Carson City collector.
Boldly rendered design elements exhibit little wear, although some minor strike softness -- typical of the issue -- is noted on the eagle's neck and the hair curls around Liberty's face. Each side has satiny fields and minimal abrasions, yielding pleasant orange-gold coloration. An appealing coin, representing an incredibly important opportunity for the Carson City specialist.
