Description

1873-CC Ten Dollar, XF45
Exceptional for the Issue and Grade, CAC
Ex: Dallas Bank Collection

1873-CC $10 XF45 PCGS. CAC. Winter 2-A. Ex: Dallas Bank Collection. The 1873-CC has a mintage of just 4,543 pieces, most of which was released at the time of issue and circulated heavily in the regional economy. Consequently, the 1873-CC is one of the rarest ten dollar gold issues in the Carson City series. Rusty Goe, in his The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, estimates a survival range of 65 to 85 pieces in all grades. This estimate is in line with the 100 examples of '73-CC tens currently certified by PCGS and NGC combined, a number of which are likely resubmitted or crossover coins.

This Choice XF specimen is an exceptional coin for the issue. The typical example is heavily abraded, poorly struck, and lacking eye appeal. Yet throughout this piece, distributed marks are much less offensive than those usually seen. There are no heavy abrasions on Liberty's face, and the portrait exhibits much better definition than often seen for the issue. Plentiful mint luster remains on the yellow-gold surfaces throughout both sides -- more than what might be expected for the designated grade. The above-average eye appeal and technical quality are aptly recognized by CAC. PCGS Population: 10 in 45, 20 finer (11/25).
