Description

Incredibly Rare 1873-CC Eagle, AU 53

1873-CC $10 AU 53 NGC. This is one of the most important Carson City tens we have ever offered. It combines obvious rarity (from a mintage of only 12,000 pieces) with condition rarity. Winter-Cutler were apparently unfamiliar with any pieces above the XF 45 level (a good reason to purchase the updated version of Doug's book on CC gold), and since the publication of that reference two separate AU 53 pieces have emerged: this piece and the one in the Harry Bass Collection. While not quite as sharply struck as the Bass coin, this piece is distinctly finer in terms of paucity of abrasions. Much luster remains over the orange-gold surfaces, and the only mark that might prove useful for pedigree purposes is a cluster of small abrasions on the cheek of Liberty. The AU 53 in the Bass Sale realized an astonishing $32,200.
