Description

1874 Ten Dollar, MS62
Elusive in Mint State

1874 $10 MS62 PCGS. After a decade of tiny mintages there were 53,160 eagles made for circulation in 1874, more than for all the years at Philadelphia from 1862 through 1873 combined. The 1874 is a common date in all circulated grades and it is only moderately scarce in lower Uncirculated grades. It becomes rare in MS63 and it is very rare finer. A single MS65+ is the finest graded at PCGS.

For most collectors, MS62 represents the smartest grade for this issue. A nice PCGS MS62 should cost around $5,000 while a PCGS MS63 -- if one could be located -- will cost more than double that amount.

Since the start of 2008, there have been five PCGS MS62 1874 eagles sold at auction. Only one has been offered since 2011 and it sold for $4,348 in Legend's Regency Auction XIII (9/2015), lot 255. The Jacobson coin is outstanding for the grade, showing satiny orange-gold luster with yellowish tendencies, complementing a lack of abrasions.
