Description

1874 Eagle, High-End MS64
The Finest Offered in a Decade

1874 $10 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The Mint struck 53,140 ten dollar gold coins in 1874 before production plummeted to 100 pieces the following year. In circulated and lower Mint State grades, the 1874 is one of the more accessible issues from the decade, scarce as it may be in an absolute sense. Most Uncirculated examples are either in MS61 or MS62. Higher-graded coins are very rare. According to our Permanent Auction Archive, no MS64 has appeared at auction since 2004, and the last Gem offered publicly was in 2008.

One could easily see this Choice Uncirculated eagle with thick mint frost and peach-gold surfaces upgrading. The strike is even and bold, and the fields are minimally marked. An outer ring of deep orange color encircles the borders on each side. Lightly clashed. Encapsulated in a green label holder with a matching CAC approval sticker. Population: 4 in 64, 3 finer. CAC: 1 in 64, 0 finer (1/18).
