Legendary 1875 Eagle/Only 120 Total Pieces Struck, 5-6 Are Believed Known Today

1875 XF 45 PCGS. The 1875 ten-dollar is one of the rarest and most desirable of all U.S. gold coins, regardless of denomination. Only 100 business strikes were produced, and estimates of survivors range from 5-6 pieces (Akers) to 4-6 (Breen). In Akers' comprehensive auction survey he found that the 1875 had fewer auction appearances than any other date in the denomination. Of the few surviving pieces of this date, none are high grade. At the XF 45 level, this piece is tied with one other as the second finest certified, these two only being bettered by a single AU 50 graded by NGC. The fields of this piece show the remnants of a deeply reflective finish, and both sides are peppered with numerous, small abrasions. The most obvious marks are a long one in the upper obverse field out from the juncture of the forehead and hair, and a scratch is also noted below star 1. On the reverse a field mark is seen above the leftmost olive leaf. A legendary eagle and one of the most important coins in the Warren Miller Collection.
