1875 Ten-Dollar--One of the Rarest and Most Desirable Gold Coins in U.S. Numismatics

1875 XF 45. One of the most remarkable features of the Diocese of Buffalo consignment is the duplication of truly rare gold coins in the collection: three Nine-Leaves 1795 tens, three 1834 Capped Bust quarter eagles, three 1810 Small Date, Small 5 fives, and two 1875 tens. Such duplication coupled with the breadth of coins accumulated indicates a focused attention on the assemblage of this collection over many years.
To recap the numismatic significance of this issue from our June Long Beach Sale (where we sold the first piece), the 1875 ten-dollar is one of the rarest and most desirable of all U.S. gold coins, regardless of denomination. Only 100 business strikes were produced, and estimates of survivors range from 5-6 pieces (Akers) to 4-6 (Breen). In Akers' comprehensive auction survey he found that the 1875 had fewer auction appearances than any other date of the denomination. Of the few surviving pieces, none are high grade. At the XF 45 level, this piece is tied with one other as fourth finest known, the finest apparently being an NGC AU 53. The fields show the remnants of a deeply reflective finish, and both sides are peppered with numerous abrasions. The most obvious marks are a cluster between the upper arrowhead and the eagle's right wing. The devices are framed by rich rose colored patina that provides a stark two-toned contrast against the brightly reflective fields. A legendary eagle and one of the most important coins from the collection donated to the Diocese of Buffalo.
