About Uncirculated 1875 Liberty Eagle, A Premier Rarity in the U.S. Gold Series

1875 $10 AU 50 PCGS. The 1875 eagle (100 business strikes produced) has the lowest mintage of any U.S. gold coin. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only 14 examples in all grades (5/00), three of which grade AU 50 and three finer. The present example, therefore, qualifies as a low-end Condition Census representative. There is little actual wear and the surfaces retain evidence of a prooflike finish in the protected areas around the devices. The open fields are, however, noticeably scuffy in appearance and the congregation of reeding marks over the central obverse should serve to identify this coin in the future. This is the finest 1875 eagle that we have handled in recent memory, the only contender being the XF 45 NGC specimen that realized $62,100 as lot 5510 in our 1997 New York ANA Sale.
