Description

1876-CC Ten Dollar, AU50
Outstanding Original Coloration

1876-CC $10 AU50 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1-A. Annual gold eagle coinage at the Carson City Mint breached the five-figure barrier (and barely) only four times prior to the 1885 to 1889 hiatus during which the mint was shut down. Double eagles dominated large denomination gold production from the Comstock Lode-fed branch mint during this period. In 1876, only 4,696 tens were struck. This issue circulated extensively and is unknown in Mint State today. The present AU coin is conditionally rare. Blatantly original surfaces yield glimpses of prooflike mirroring in the fields with flashes of orange-gold color. Deeper olive-gold patina embraces the lightly worn areas. Each side has scattered chatter, consistent with the grade and issue. CAC-endorsed in a green label holder. Population: 10 in 50, 10 finer. CAC: 2 in 50, 3 finer (11/16).
