    Description

    1877 Eagle, Pleasing AU55
    Just 797 Pieces Struck

1877 $10 AU55 NGC. One of four extremely low-mintage Philadelphia eagles from the 1870s with mintages under 1,000 pieces (1873, 1875, 1876, and 1877). An estimated 50 to 65 survivors remain from the original mintage of 797 pieces. Just three examples are reported in Mint State, all at PCGS -- one coin in MS60, two examples in MS61.

This Choice About Uncirculated example retains a good amount of its original prooflike character, particularly at the margins but also in and around the central motifs. Nice luster remains beneath the olive-gold patina. There are no individually significant marks; rather, a gathering of small abrasions appear on both sides of the coin, but fewer marks than most of this rare date possess. We seldom have the opportunity to offer one of these classically rare eagles, and one so nice may not surface again for several years. Census: 9 in 55, 9 finer (6/14).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 265F, PCGS# 8677)
