Description

1877-S Ten Dollar Gold, AU58
Scarce, Low-Mintage Date

1877-S $10 AU58 PCGS. The 1877-S Liberty Head eagle claims a mintage of just 17,000 pieces, small when compared to production totals of other denominations, but actually good-sized in the context of the series. Lower grade examples can be found with some patience today, but high grade pieces are elusive. In the words of Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, "About Uncirculated examples are very scarce." Currently, PCGS has certified only two examples in AU58, with none finer (8/10).
The present coin is an attractive near-Mint example, with pleasing orange-gold surfaces, and much original mint luster. All design elements are sharply detailed and only minor, grade-consistent abrasions are evident.(Registry values: N2998)
