Description

1877-S Liberty Head Ten Dollar, MS61
Finest at PCGS
Overlooked Condition Rarity

1877-S $10 MS61 PCGS. The 1877-S ten dollar gold production was just 17,000 pieces, and virtually no coins were saved by collectors at the time. Today, the issue is scarce in any grade and it is a great rarity in Mint State. Heritage has seen only two other examples at the MS61 grade in our entire 20+ year archive, the most recent as part of the well-formed Admiral Collection in 2018, which realized $31,200 in an NGC holder. We handled one other example (also MS61 NGC) in 2014. Based on the current population reports, PCGS and NGC combined have certified only four Mint State pieces -- one in MS60 NGC, three in MS61 NGC, and this sole example certified MS61 PCGS as of August 2025, not accounting for possible duplicate grading events.

This sharply struck orange-gold example is vibrantly lustrous and displays faint rose accents. The expected number of small abrasions and luster grazes exist on the well-defined surfaces, none of which are individually deep or distracting. The mint-fresh obverse and reverse offer strong eye appeal throughout both sides. Population: 1 in 61, 0 finer (8/25).(Registry values: N7079)
