Bright Near-Gem 1878 Liberty Eagle
1878 $10 MS64 NGC. Erroneously perceived as a common date among most collectors, the 1878 Ten is an elusive issue whose survivors typically grade either VF or XF. Near-Gem representatives are as difficult to obtain as those of the lower mintage 1874. This is a scintillating example that displays rich mint frost with bright golden patina and clean features. With a bold strike that is free of criticism, advanced gold collectors would be wise to enter carefully considered bids when this coin crosses the auction block. NGC and PCGS combined report only 20 examples in MS64 with a lone MS65 PCGS piece finer (10/04).(#8680) (Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 265J, PCGS# 8680, GSID# 9399)
