1878-S Eagle, Uncirculated Details
Better West Coast Issue

1878-S $10 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. In his 1980 multi-volume reference to the Federal gold series, David W. Akers wrote that "I can think of no U.S. coin of comparable rarity that has been more ignored and lightly regarded than the 1878-S eagle." It has a low mintage, 26,100 pieces, and is surprisingly rare in all grades. Only a handful of pieces have been certified as Mint State, which suggests that examples entered West Coast commerce instead of being held as bullion in foreign bank vaults. This apricot-gold representative is mildly bright from a cleaning, and displays moderate marks on the cheek.
