Description
1879 Eagle, MS65
An Elusive High-Grade Pre-1880 Ten
1879 $10 MS65 PCGS. The 1879 eagle is common in grades
through MS63 and it is scarce in MS64. Gems, however, are rare and
PCGS has graded just this one coin in MS65, plus two pieces in
MS66. The undisputed finest known is an NGC MS67 which brought a
record $66,700 in Bowers and Merena (8/2007), lot 1875.There are just two auction records for this date in PCGS MS65, including this coin (see the pedigree below for further information). This 1879 eagle is among the finest known and it represents an unusual opportunity to acquire a pre-1880 Liberty Head ten dollar in Gem Uncirculated. The surfaces are pristine with brilliant light yellow luster and faint traces of rose toning. There are few marks of any kind, and the strike is bold with virtually full design definition.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 4981, where it sold for $12,650.
