Elusive 1879/8 Eagle
1879/8 $10 MS 60. This is a rare variety that Walter Breen asserts is all but unknown in Mint State. Under suitable magnification, one can see traces of an 8 below the last digit in the date. As befits a P-mint issue from the late 19th century, the devices exhibit razor sharp delineation, although trivial lack of detail on the hair over the ear is noted. Numerous light contact marks, as well as a pair of moderate abrasions above the eagle's left (facing) wing, interrupt the yellow-gold surfaces and account for the basal Mint State grade. Nevertheless, this lot represents a fleeting opportunity for gold specialists.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 265M, PCGS# 8683, GSID# 9400)
