Description
1879-CC Liberty Eagle, AU50
Rarest Ten Dollar Issue for the Year
Only 60 to 75 Coins Extant
1879-CC $10 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Ex: Rian's Bequest. Ten
dollar gold coins were struck at four different mint facilities for
the first time in 1879. The two keys for the year are the 1879-O
(1,500 coins), which represented the return to coinage production
for the New Orleans Mint after an 18-year hiatus, and the 1879-CC
(1,762 coins). Although the 1879-O has a lower mintage and is
arguably better known, this Nevada mint issue is actually rarer.
Only 60 to 75 pieces are thought to survive in all grades,
according to Rusty Goe (2020).Orange-gold surfaces exhibit distinct semiprooflike reflectivity, particularly in the reverse fields. That side is partly contrasted with strong devices that show a layer of frost. Contrast and detail are not quite as crisp on the obverse, but the overall eye appeal and preservation of this Carson City rarity are terrific. Population: 6 in 50, 12 finer (11/21).
