Description

1879-CC Liberty Head Ten Dollar, AU53
Lowest Mintage for Any CC Gold Coin
Conditionally Rare

1879-CC $10 AU53 NGC. CAC. Variety 1-A. A single pair of dies accomplished the lowest mintage for any Carson City gold coin. Only 1,762 eagles were struck at the Nevada branch mint in 1879. Consequently, the 1879-CC is about as rare as the famous first-year 1870-CC ten dollar. In all, probably 50 or 60 coins survive, and there are merely one or two examples believed extant in Mint State. The offering of any 1879-CC eagle is a notable event, let alone one in this relatively high grade and with original surfaces. We expect to see spirited bidding from knowledgeable gold specialists.

Trivial friction fails to obscure the design features on this strongly detailed rarity. The 1879-CC tends not to be well-struck, but this is a delightful exception. Lightly abraded red-gold surfaces retain a hint of their original reflectivity in the fields. A terrific example, among the finest with CAC endorsement, showing a single pedigree marker above the 7 in the date. Census: 5 in 53, 9 finer. CAC: 3 in 53, 0 finer (1/18).
