Description

1879-CC Liberty Eagle, AU53+
Sought-After, Low-Mintage Issue

1879-CC $10 AU53+ NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1879-CC Liberty eagle claims a low mintage of just 1,762 pieces, the lowest production total for any gold coin ever struck at the famous Western facility. The coins were all struck from a single pair of dies and all show a diagnostic die line through the E in LIBERTY. The coins were released into circulation at the time of issue and few examples were saved by contemporary collectors. PCGS CoinFacts estimates the surviving population of the 1879-CC at just 45-60 examples in all grades.

The present coin is a Plus-graded AU53 specimen that shows some light wear on the well-detailed design elements., but the die line through E remains bold. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster and the overall presentation is quite pleasing. Census: 6 in 53 (1 in 53+), 10 finer (7/18).(Registry values: N7079)
