1879-CC Ten Dollar Gold, AU53

Only 1,762 Pieces Struck
1879-CC $10 AU53 NGC. Winter 1-A. The Comstock Lode mineral
output was 75% less than the previous year, never to recover to its
previous levels of the mid-1870s. Shrinking gold deposits and a
multi-month work stoppage limited the 1879-CC eagle production to a
mere 1,762 pieces -- the lowest ten dollar gold mintage ever at the
Carson City Mint and the lowest mintage of any gold denomination in
the Nevada mint's history. A single die pair struck the entire
1879-CC eagle output.Population reports indicate that most survivors fall in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine range, with a few in the About Uncirculated category and a single Mint State coin. This AU53 example displays golden-orange color, with slightly deeper shades of copper-gold surrounding the design elements. The motifs are generally bold, particularly on the reverse. On the obverse, some of Liberty's hair curls and a few of the star centers show slight softness, as often seen. Minute circulation abrasions are noted, including a few obverse scratches and scattered small digs. A bold die line angles across E in LIBERTY. Plentiful eye appeal remains intact. NGC Census: 6 in 53 (1 in 53+), 8 finer (12/24).(Registry values: N7079)
