    Description

Low Mintage 1879-O Ten Dollar, AU50 PCGS

1879-O $10 AU50 PCGS. Even though the New Orleans mint was opened once again after an 18-year hiatus, gold coin production was severely restricted. Only 1,500 eagles and 2,325 double eagles were struck, with the main focus of the mint on striking the new Morgan dollar. The 1879-O ten has the second lowest mintage among O-mint eagles and is equal in rarity to the 1859-O and the lower mintage 1883-O. This is a lightly circulated example that displays even, rich golden-orange coloration with reddish-pink patina around the devices. The fields retain some of the original semi-prooflike finish with several small but individually insignificant abrasions scattered about. Well defined for the issue. Population: 7 in 50, 15 finer (7/04).(#8685) (Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 265P, PCGS# 8685)
