Description

1879-O Eagle, AU53
Rare in All Grades

1879-O $10 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1. The only variety known. In 1879, the New Orleans Mint began producing eagles again for the first time since 1860. The mintage of eagles in this year was a mere 1,500 coins, the second-lowest mintage of any eagle from this Mint. Douglas Winter (2006) estimates the total known to be 115 to 135 pieces. The PCGS website, on the other hand, suggests that 75 to 100 are known. This service has seen 40 pieces, all grading Very Fine to AU58. NGC has graded 45 examples, the finest a solitary MS61.

The present AU53 specimen displays yellow-gold partially prooflike surfaces that exhibit sharply struck design elements. Distributed light marks are noted but are nowhere as frequent or severe as usually seen on this issue. Population: 5 in 53, 10 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N4719)
