Description
1879-O Ten Dollar, AU55
Very Challenging to Locate in Higher Grades
1879-O $10 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. With a mintage of only 1,500
pieces only one pair of dies was required. The 1879-O ten dollar
has the second lowest mintage of any O-mint ten -- and of any New
Orleans gold issue for that matter. NGC has certified only three
examples in mint condition (one MS60 and two in MS61), and PCGS has
certified two Uncirculated pieces (one MS60 and one MS61), making
it virtually impossible to find an 1879-O eagle finer than the
present Choice AU. Pleasing yellow-gold patina drapes the surfaces
of this seldom offered rarity. Both sides show scattered abrasions,
which is typical for the issue, but there are no marks of any
significance. This sharply struck representative has just a trace
of weakness on the hair above Liberty's ear and the stars.
Significant luster gleams from the protected areas and gives this
piece lovely eye appeal.Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2008), lot 3911.
