Description

1879-O Eagle, Choice AU
Frosty, Eye-Appealing O-Mint Rarity
Just 1,500 Pieces Struck

1879-O $10 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. Survival estimates for the 1879-O eagle range from 70 to 135 coins from a mintage of just 1,500 pieces. That is not only the second lowest production total for any New Orleans ten dollar but for any gold denomination from that facility. Auction appearances are scant, perhaps two or three a year, and most of those coins have what Doug Winter calls "below average eye appeal." To that point, this is one of only eight 1879-O eagles that bears the approval of CAC.

Coppery-gold surfaces are characteristically prooflike with frosty, needle-sharp relief elements. On the obverse, the star radials are clear and the central curls bold, while the reverse displays crisp feathers, talons, and olive leaves. There are wispy marks on each side but none of significant importance. Encapsulated in an old green label holder. Population: 6 in 55, 9 finer. CAC: 3 in 55, 2 finer (1/18).
