Description

1879-O Liberty Eagle, AU58
Key New Orleans Issue
Only 1,500 Pieces Produced

1879-O $10 AU58 NGC. After an 18-year hiatus, the New Orleans Mint reopened in 1879 with a primary purpose of striking silver dollars to help meet the requirements of the Bland-Allison Act. Coining other denominations was strictly an afterthought, although the facility did produce small quantities of eagles and double eagles that year. The ten dollar mintage was just 1,500 pieces, and few were saved since no one collected by mintmark at the time. PCGS Coin Facts estimates only 70 survivors. As expected, near-Mint coins like the current offering are rare. Indeed, the combined NGC Census and PCGS Population of 13 AU58 examples is probably inflated by resubmissions sent in with the hope of obtaining a Mint State classification.

The yellow-gold surfaces of this specimen display semiprooflike fields that contrast moderately against the motifs. The strike is uniformly sharp with just a hint of softness on the hair strands around Liberty's ear. The eye appeal for this important rarity is decidedly above-average. Census: 6 in 58 (1 in 58+), 3 finer (7/25).
