Description
Near-Mint 1879-O Eagle
Only One Finer Certified
1879-O $10 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. Closed in the early days of
the Civil War, the New Orleans Mint was reopened in 1879 primarily
to help produce the enormous number of Morgan dollars required
under the terms of the Bland-Allison Act. Fortunately, a small
number of eagles and double eagles was also produced in 1879, and
these coins are quite popular with present-day collectors. From a modest mintage of just 1,500 pieces, the 1879-O Liberty ten is the third-rarest New Orleans eagle. Doug Winter estimates 115-135 examples remain extant in all grades, and high-grade specimens are rare. Only a single coin has been certified in Mint State making an attractive near-Mint example, like the present coin, the best any collector can reasonably expect to acquire.
The coin offered here is a delightful AU58 specimen, with pleasing yellow-gold surfaces that show a few highlights of green. Only the slightest trace of high-point wear is evident on the well-detailed design elements, with a scattering of grade-consistent minor marks on both sides. The prooflike luster adds to the considerable eye appeal. Census: 11 in 58, 1 finer (8/12).(Registry values: N4719)
